Maintenance of Exterior Decking. Is It Really Necessary?

Exterior decking is an excellent choice for transforming terraces, patios, or any outdoor space.

While traditional wood and other composite decks on the market require treatments—such as teak oils, sanding, or varnishes—VISENDUM® Technological Wood DOES NOT REQUIRE TREATMENT, meaning there’s no need to use oils or varnish to prevent cupping, splintering, or greying.

What Types of Stains Are There?

Superficial stains always result from deposits on the decking. Natural deposits include contamination such as bituminous residues from vehicle combustion, but also mud (haze) or algae buildup. Distinct from these are accidental deposits—such as oil, beverages, coffee, pool salt and lime, or hard water stains.

Nature, Porosity, and Density of Exterior Decking

All materials are porous. The deeper the penetration, the harder the stain is to remove. Stain depth depends on pore size—larger pores allow deeper penetration. One must distinguish between closed-pore materials (like porcelain, glass, or plastic) and open-pore materials. Among open-pore materials are large-pore ones like stone, natural wood, synthetic hollow composites, brick… and microporous materials like VISENDUM® Natural Range Technological Wood.

Why VISENDUM® Is Not a Deck with Standard Pores?

Because VISENDUM® density is 1,217kg/m³, higher than that of tropical wood (usually 1,050 kg/m³), and because VISENDUM® passes the EN 321 test for extreme climate resistance. It meets the European EN 321 standard since it contains neither PVC nor silicates (e.g., rice husk sand), and its high density comes from 70% recycled pine wood fiber and HDPE.

That’s why VISENDUM® exterior decking is installed in deserts (Dubai, Qatar, Morocco), tropical wetlands (Panama, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Nigeria), and even ski resorts (Tignes in the French Alps).

How to Care for and Maintain Exterior Decking?

Although VISENDUM® Technological Decking® requires no treatment, periodic cleaning is recommended to preserve its qualities. The maintenance of outdoor decking depend on the degree of dirt or staining:

  • Level 1: Neutral soap and plastic-bristle brush.
  • Level 2: Descaler for more stubborn stains.
  • Level 3: Degreaser for grease stains.

Optionally, bleach with detergent may be used when the user deems appropriate.

Specific Maintenance Recommendations

  • For oil stains: Clean with a degreaser (e.g., KH7 or equivalent).
  • For deposits, pollution, rain, mud, or algae:
    • Water + brush + plastic (manual or mechanical) + squeegee to remove water and surface dirt.
    • Water + plastic brush + dishwasher liquid + squeegee.
    • Water + plastic brush + neutral soap.
  • For resistant stains: An alkaline descaler (e.g. VOLTARIM) is highly effective.
  • For salt deposits: Use water and a squeegee.

The optimal procedure is to finish by removing excess water with a squeegee, mop, or vacuum, to avoid small puddles—even though the boards remain wet afterwards; drying is not required.

VISENDUM® NAN: Cleaning Facilitator

Optionally, a nanofiller product may be applied to the surface to saturate the micropore of the material (as it is open-pore, as noted above).

VISENDUM® NAN

What Is VISENDUM® NAN and How Does It Work?

It is a water-based hydro- and oleophobic agent composed of high-performance nanoparticles, designed to saturate the micropore of VISENDUM® Technological Wood and VISENDUM® Natural Range Technological Decking®.

Its purpose is to fill the micropore so that dirt remains on the surface rather than penetrating the material, making cleaning easier. Its use is entirely optional.
