Why VISENDUM® and not Bamboo, Mahogany or Ipe?

VISENDUM®, unlike bamboo, mahogany or ipé, avoids the destruction of forests, as we do not need to cut any trees in the production process and we use renewable energy sources to protect the environment.

¿Por qué VISENDUM® y no Bamboo, Caoba o Ipé?

In the next 80 years, more than 35% of the bamboo forests that shelter pandas will be eliminated, according to data collected by WWF (World Wildlife Fund). For this reason, the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) also foresees a reduction in the population of this species, thus cancelling out the achievements of the last 20 years.

VISENDUM® Technology Wood is truly committed to environmentally sustainable construction and the application of a circular business model based on respect for the environment.

Economía Circular

According to the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations), direct logging of mahogany causes 10% of tropical deforestation and facilitates tropical forest losses.

FAO estimates that 25% of mahogany imports are not in compliance with CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). This Convention establishes a global network of controls on international trade in endangered wildlife and their products, requiring the use of official permits to authorize trade.

According to FAO, forests containing mahogany populations cover an area of 235 million hectares, and during the last decade there has been an annual forest loss equivalent to 0.38% of the total area. Natural regeneration of mahogany needs to be allowed to become established. Part of the genetic resources of mahogany are endangered, and a joint effort is urgently needed to minimize deforestation and overexploitation, which are reducing the species population.

In the same line, Greenpeace points out that mahogany logging is a step in the process of forest colonization, which includes slash-and-burn agriculture, breaking the continuity of the forest and heavily damaging our ecosystem.

At VISENDUM® Technological Decking we ensure the origin of the raw material from responsibly managed forests, providing PEFC, LEED, BREEAM and GREEN certifications.

Grifols

FAO also denounces the indiscriminate cutting of species such as the lapacho or ipé, currently rare and endangered specimens.

Greenpeace reveals that ipé is stained with blood and destruction. Like coltan, uranium or diamonds, its extraction and international trade is stained with blood. The density of this tree in the jungle is very low, so many paths have to be opened in the jungle to access this wood. It is estimated that there is one ipé tree in an area of 10 soccer fields! Many lies are told about ipé, such as that there is more ipé wood than actually exists.

In VISENDUM® we are very focused on environmental sustainability, so unlike mahogany, ipé or bamboo, manufactured in China or America, we prevent the emission of millions of kg of CO2 into the atmosphere, as we avoid burning thousands of liters of fuel oil for maritime or land transport so our production process is fully clean and careful with the planet.

VISENDUM® is ideal for outdoor pedestrian use, walkways, pavements, pool decks, terrace decks, steps, stairs, doors, furniture, wall and cladding coverings, pergolas, lattices, fences and enclosures.

T1 Aeropuerto Barcelona

On October 1, 2020, the new Spanish Technical Building Code (CTE), approved in the last days of 2019, came into force. In VISENDUM® we fully comply with both this Code and the rest of the national and European regulations, providing physical safety to users and legal security to Institutions or Developers, since we passed the slip test according to the European test UNE 41901: 2017 EXT.

VISENDUM® Technological Wood is used in renowned facilities such as T1 at Barcelona’s El Prat Airport by Ricardo Bofill (the largest European construction project) or in the Hotel Santos Porta Fira in Barcelona, designed by Toyo Ito and b720 Fermín Vázquez Architects, winner of the 2010 Emporis Skyscraper Award for the best skyscraper in the world. The Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Ben Guerir is another outstanding site that has VISENDUM® in its installations.

¿Por qué VISENDUM® y no Bamboo, Caoba o Ipé?

The exceptional moment of climate urgency we are going through demands a responsible response from all of us. Let’s start building the world we want.
